Who is Cardiff City’s new striker Robert Glatzel and what will he add for Neil Warnock’s men?

Cardiff City completed the signing of Robert Glatzel from Bundesliga Two outfit Heidenheim, but who exactly is the forward?

Glatzel possesses a huge stature and stands at 6 ft 4 tall. He already appears to be a Warnock type of player – with the club penning him down to a three-year contract on a deal, which could see him stay at the club until 2023.

He is an unknown quality as of yet, but the Bluebirds fans have a right to get excited about the 25-year-old, who could hold the tools to help the Bluebirds mount a promotion challenge in the Championship this season.

Where was Glatzel born, and where else has he played?

Glatzel was born in Furstenfeldbruck, in Germany.

The forward played youth football for SC Furstenfeldbruck; as well as having spells at both 1860 Munich and Spvgg Unterhaching. He made his senior debut for the latter but failed to make an impact. He made the decision to re-join 1860 Munich II, where he netted three times in eight games for the second team during the 2012/2013 season.

The German has also had spells at Wacker Burghausen, but he really made a name for himself when joining 1. FC Kaiserlautern II in 2015, where he showed what he is capable of, netting an impressive 27 times in 47 appearances.

He also had a brief spell in the first team, scoring four times in 19 games for them between 2015 and 2017, before securing a move to Heidenheim.

The forward was massively impressive last season, scoring 17 times in all competitions for the Bundesliga Two side – including a hat-trick in the quarter-final of the DFB-Pokal, against German powerhouses, Bayern Munich – which Heidenheim eventually lost, 5-4.

What has Neil Warnock said about Glatzel, then?

The Bluebirds manager was clearly delighted to finally sign the man he had been chasing for quite some time and will hope the German striker will hit the ground running when there Sky Bet Championship campaign gets underway this weekend – when they take on Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking to the official Cardiff City website, Warnock said: “I’m excited to capture Robert’s signature. He’s a player I have been chasing for over five weeks. It’s been hard work to get it over the line, but I’m delighted to welcome him.”

“He’ll do a good job for us. He’s the type of striker I’ve been looking for to lead the line, and he’s looking forward to the challenge as well.”

What can he add to Cardiff City’s attacking line?

The Bluebirds have waited some time to bring in Glatzel, after offloading Kenneth Zohore to Championship rivals, West Bromwich Albion.

And he could be the piece to the jigsaw that Cardiff have been missing. He is a powerful forward and he showed he can do it against the best when scoring a hat-trick against Bayern Munich last season.

He is a talented, powerful forward – there is little doubt about that. Now he needs to show it on the pitch. The Championship is a tough league, and even the best of strikers struggle.

The Bluebirds fans will be hoping he adapts to life quickly in the Championship this season; as Warnock’s men look to bounce back following their relegation from the Premier League last season.
