Following Neville Powell’s appointment in the weeks leading up to the start of the 2017/18 season, many expected a number of Powell’s former players to be transfer targets as he aimed to build a squad capable of improving on last seasons disappointing 10th place finish, and one of the first to join was former Bangor City right back Declan Walker. A firm fan favourite during his time with Nev Powell at Bangor City, he was the first choice right back from his arrival in 2013 until his departure in 2016, when an unfortunate leg injury forced Walker to leave the club, it was little surprise to see Powell reach out to convince his former player to join him at the Seasiders.
With Neville Powell having joined in the middle of pre-season and with under a month to get the team ready for the start of the Welsh Premier League season, it was widely predicted that his team might struggle in their opening matches until they had a chance to get used to his style of management, and this proved to be the case as the Seasiders lost 5 of their opening 8, drawing 3 and, in mid-October, found themselves sitting bottom of the league and still looking for their first win of the season. But things were beginning to click into place for Aberystwyth Town, whose performances were improving with every match, and in the next fixture against Llandudno, they picked up their first win of the season. In that win, Walker was an instrumental figure, scoring the opening goal in a fantastic performance reminiscent of his days performing for Bangor City, where he was considered one of the most consistent full backs in the league.
Aberystwyth Town’s resurgence coincided with Walker rediscovering his best form, and, as Phase 1 finished, he finds himself in the position of being the Seasiders’ joint top-scorer, alongside Craig Hobson and Joe Phillips, all on 4 goals. He has added pace and danger to an attack that had stagnated last season, and is now a crucial player for Nev Powell’s side as they hope to battle for a European Play-Off place in the Second Phase.
