The Rematch with an edge – Liam Williams v Liam Smith

On Saturday night in Newcastle, Liam Williams the Welsh fighter from Church Village will fight for the second time, Liverpool born Liam Smith. The two fighters clearly dislike each other which has carried over from their first bout which ended controversially, when at the end of the ninth round, Williams was unable to continue due to a bad cut, where many felt the cut was caused by a headbutt. Williams was ahead on the scorecards but as the reason for the cut was unclear, the decision did not go to the scorecards and Smith was declared the victor.

Liam Williams is the reigning European, Commonwealth and British Super Welterweight Champion and he is looking to get his name firmly on the world scene, and a win against Smith, who has been a World Champion and shared a ring with Alvarez and performed well, would certainly do that. Smith is looking to get back to the world stage again after already being there, and at 29 years of age, he may feel if he cannot overcome Williams then this is not achievable or moving up to another weight. Williams at 25 years of age, is younger and has had 9 fewer fights than Smith, he is hungry and is looking to reach the summit at his weight, he is ambitious but does he have the ability to overcome Smith on Saturday? Only time will tell.

I think as per the first fight, boxing fans are in for an entertaining fight. Both fighters now know what qualities the other has, so won’t be taking either lightly. If I had to make a prediction, then I just give the edge to Smith, who I think just has the greater boxing ability and even though my heart wants Williams to get the win and go onto a shot at a World Title, I am going for Liam Smith to get the win by decision after 12 hard rounds.

Do you agree with my prediction? Let me know on our forum set up for fans.
